Amplify Community Voices

October and Novembeer-community-assemblies-flyer.pdf (3)

Your livelihood, your world, your experience. Let's Talk.

Tumwater residents, workers, and community members are invited to participate in community assemblies on October 11 and/or November 12 to help the City understand the realities of everyday life now and in a changing climate in Tumwater. A hot meal and childcare are provided for attendees.

In 2025 we know that four out of five households in Tumwater at least have some worry about affording one or more of the following expenses: housing, groceries, utilities, medical expenses, transportation, or other debt. We also know that life doesn’t treat people equally, and that many Tumwater community members have experience that can help shape and guide the direction of efforts to curb pollution that is warming our world, increasing risks to food, flood and fires, and hurting people’s health and livelihoods both locally and worldwide. If you can relate with any of these statements, please consider attending one or both of these community assemblies to share your experiences, ideas, and concerns.

Community members will have a space to freely express their hopes, dreams, fears, ideas, and needs. People will have an opportunity to ask questions, brainstorm, and envision solutions that meet their needs, and the needs of their Tumwater community.

Thanks to a grant funded through Washington’s Climate Commitment Act (CCA) TCAT is working to Amplify Community Voices during the comprehensive planning process. Historically, people most affected by the climate crisis have no say in the solutions. TCAT is working to change that.

Paris McClusky, TCAT’s Community Organizer, is helping bring new voices to the table during comprehensive planning and beyond. While we are specifically working to address the climate crisis, these same skills can be used to bring broader views to the table on all public policy issues.

A comprehensive plan is a long-term community plan for the vision and goals for the future, in this case, the next 20 years. Thurston County, Tumwater, Lacey, and Olympia are currently working on their own comprehensive plans which include chapters on: housing; environment; transportation; land use; public services, economy and climate.

Paris is working with:

  • Under-represented and overburdened communities to listen to their concerns, explore possible solutions, and involve them in the comprehensive planning process, particularly chapters involving climate change.
  • Thurston County and the cities of Olympia, Lacey, and Tumwater to break down barriers to public participation and identify public engagement opportunities.
  • A broad coalition of Thurston County residents to help them understand the comprehensive planning process, the climate crisis, and how they can have a say in their future.

If you feel you or your community group would like to be part of this project, please contact Paris at .

Stay tuned for much more information including a schedule of events, activities, and trainings.
