Organized Labor Supports Meaningful Climate Action in Thurston County
By Jeff Johnston
The Thurston Climate Action Team (TCAT)/ Carbon-Free Thurston Team has worked over the past several months to meet with organized labor in Thurston County to involve them in the important climate mitigation work taking place locally, request their support for this work, and ensure that labor’s concerns are incorporated.
As the city councils of Lacey, Olympia and Tumwater, and the Thurston County Commissioners embark on climate mitigation efforts to meet aggressive greenhouse gas reduction targets in the coming years, it is critical that we broaden the support base from the community for these efforts.
In September 2018, the Washington Federation of State Employees (WFSE) Local 443, signed a statement of support of this effort, and in January 2019, the Thurston-Lewis-Mason Central Labor Council signed a statement of support as well. Organized labor will be a critical partner in the important climate mitigation work going forward.
Please let us know if you are a member of – or have suggestions about – other labor organizations that we should contact about supporting this important work. Better solutions will come from more organizations at the table.
